In May of 1998, Lucas enlisted into the Army Reserves as a Private (E-1) into B Co, 365th Engineering Battalion in Reading, PA as a Carpentry/Masonry Specialist (12W). He supported Operation Santa Fe for three weeks in San Salvador, El Salvador. In December of 2002, Lucas was reassigned to the 327th Military Police Battalion where he was deployed to Bagram, Afghanistan to support detainee operations as an engineer. After two years of rest and recuperation, Lucas was reassigned to the 324th Military Police Battalion where he deployed to Baghdad, Iraq to support detainee operations as an engineer, NCOIC over a 10-man Engineer section of various engineering specialties. After returning back to the states after another 15-month deployment, Lucas transferred to the 350th Civil Affairs Command. Re-qualified as a Civil Affairs NCO (38B). Lucas was then ordered to the Defense Language Institute in Monterrey, California where he attended language training and ran operations.
Some of his notable awards are Army Commendation Medal (2nd Award), Army Achievement Medal (4th Award), Good Conduct Medal Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal w/ “M” Device (2nd Award), NCO Professional Development Ribbon Army Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Component Overseas Training Ribbon.
