Please briefly describe your company and its contribution to an innovative and disruptive health, wellness, benefits and/or insurance industry?

Here at BankUnited, we aim to bring wellness to our employees making it easier for them to receive their preventative care throughout the year. We recently implemented comprehensive eye examinations, frame selection and delivery of completed glasses. Additionally, we offer mobile dental exams and comprehensive skin cancer screenings. This progressive approach to preventative care allows employees to take care of these routine exams without having to take time off from work.

How long have you been involved in the industry?

I’ve been in the commercial fitness and corporate wellness industry for over 10 years.

How have your previous roles lead you to your current position and where do you see your next big move within your company to serve as an agent of change?

Previous roles in both commercial fitness and corporate wellness/concierge wellness services led to my current position with BankUnited. My passion and experience are the vehicles that drive the success of this program organizationally. The most logical transition for me at this point will be to expand the current program offerings and build a wellness department within the existing organization. Delivering the message of wellness to other organizational leaders will allow me to share the benefits we receive from our wellness platform and hopefully inspire other employers to do the same for their employees.

What do you see as the most disruptive innovation in healthcare, benefits, well-being or technology to be today and what do you see around the corner?

Innovation means going against industry standards and creating your own pathway toward a future of wellness that makes a difference. On site medical, eye and dental are the wave of the future. Convenience is not the only benefit – reductions in ER visits and Urgent Care visits are dramatically reduced by having an onsite medical clinic. It also encourages employees to visit their PCP annually. Finally, preventative screenings are typically put off unless absolutely emergent, if you deliver these services on site the employee feels valued and also isn’t pressured by having to take time off from work to take care of a preventative screening.

What, in your opinion, is the largest obstacle facing employers today? What do you believe is the number one solution (if you had to choose one) to overcome that obstacle? What has your company done to incorporate this solution today? What is your long-term solution to tackle this challenge?

Largest obstacle facing employers today is ensuring that employees feel valued and appreciated. The demands of employees (at least in the finance industry) is so incredibly high that they are often forced to function in high stress environments that are deadline driven. The solution is to implement programs that allow employees access to resources, services and information that allow them to take better care of themselves. Improvement in overall quality of life is the goal. BankUnited has not only implemented a robust employee wellness program but also opened a large dining facility at our corporate headquarters as well as 6,000 square foot professionally managed fitness center offering everything from a “Zen Room” to Spin classes and personal training. My long-term solution is to bring as many resources to regions outside of the Miami area (where we are headquartered) so all employees feel as though they have equal access to wellness resources.

How do you envision the future of healthcare five years from now? Ten years from now?

Much of how healthcare operates in the future depends on the industry drivers. Sadly, we are at the mercy of political agendas and bureaucracy driven policies that often make it challenging for health care consumers to make educated decisions. Ideally, we would loosen the reigns on boundaries with regard to insurance pricing so as to make the market more competitive.

What are three things you do each day to improve your own health and well-being?

I eat well, I exercise daily, and I spend quality time with my two pugs.

What is the most recent innovative or even “crazy” thing you have done to improve your health or well-being?

Always being the first to try new things, I recently tried cupping therapy. Cupping therapy has a rich history in Chinese and European medicine recently gaining recognition during the Olympics when swimmer Michael Phelps showed up sporting what appeared to be circular bruises on his back and shoulders. Myofascial decompression is a clinical technique used by many physical therapists that allow the muscle to expand stretching the fascia. Used in conjunction with stretching it can be highly effective.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received that you would pass along to others just entering the industry?

Join as many wellness organizations as you can – this will help develop and expand your network of subject matter experts.

Do you utilize health and/or wellness apps and if so what are your top three?

My Fitness Pal and Garmin are two I use fairly regularly.
